A couple hours into practice we have a mandatory fire safety meeting where everyone is reminded how we keep this flow practice safe. New ones get a thorough lesson in the precautions. Then we light up.

Always a show-stopper, fire-breathing is a dangerous stunt that requires much practice in a safe setting. Eric Redfern has been working hard on his technique.

Krysta has been coming to the Monday Night Flow Jam to practice her acro skills but this week she was persuaded to give the fans a try and the results were stunning. Fans are an elegant form of fire flow and with her dance skills, you’d never know it was her first fire performance.

Jack Jack is the group recorder. He videos each performance and posts them to the group’s YouTube page.

Members can review their own videos and see what they might want to change or what works best. Sometimes members will critique each other and the feedback is invaluable.  Then there’s always the fact that it’s YouTube - a video with many views is always a good sign.

This is just a small sample of what goes on here every Monday night. Mike uses tires also as a film studio and sound stage for “unconventional filming and exquisite sets.” He has produced everything from music videos and shorts to documentaries and feature films. He has plans to start an improv theater in August at Tires.

Over fifty flow enthusiasts celebrated the release of the DFC website at our regular Monday night practice on June 1. In spite of the fact that it was unseasonably chilly we spun fire outside to accommodate all the fire dancers. At times three or four members were performing at the same time, each with their own ‘safety detail,’ a person watching their every move and ready with a wet towel in case of any mishaps. As the group continues to grow so does the variety of flow toys, but one favorite is Andrew Stoicu’s ember poi, pictured here. Stoicu is a highly skilled fire dancer working with a dangerous prop as burning embers float around him. The bandana protects him from breathing in the embers, or as Brenticus Pan calls it, “Fairy dust for pyros.” See you all next week!

"Thank you for baring your hearts and amazing skills with us!" - Lynette Arlene

"I was guided to the Detroit Fire Collective through Danielle 'Doxie' Kaltz and Thaddeus 'Brick' McKracken. I had recently relocated to Detroit from Italy and was working on the FIRE Issue of Posh Sauvage Magazine. They put me in touch with Jadey Recca, who reached out to the community and invited us to meet everyone from the Detroit Fire Collective.

I was genuinely touched by the beauty of the community of the Detroit Fire Collective. The collective made time to meet with us under very harsh deadlines, made content available, shared their stories with us. I learned that this collective is more than flow artists sharing their techniques, they are a community that enriched each other's lives. As they practiced their diverse disciplines you could witness the joy in each other's faces as they achieved new heights, not only in themselves but in the others they were sharing with.

After our experience, my daughter has been inspired and embraced by the community and meets up when possible on Monday Night Flow Jams. Something unexpected has become something in our lives we truly look forward to being part of, supporting and growing with. Thank you for baring your hearts and amazing skills with us!"
